Private GP Appointments for Children in Salisbury: A Guide for Parents

Children often become unwell quickly, and it can be difficult for parents to know whether symptoms need urgent care, a routine GP appointment, or simply careful monitoring at home. At The Grosvenor Practice, we can now offer private GP appointments for children, giving families in Salisbury access to timely, face-to-face medical advice when they need it.

Why Parents May Choose a Private GP Appointment for Their Child

When a child is unwell, parents often want reassurance, clear advice, and a practical plan. A private GP appointment can provide more time to discuss your concerns, examine your child carefully, and decide whether any further tests, treatment, or referral may be needed.

Private GP appointments can be particularly helpful when symptoms are worrying but not an emergency, when a problem has been going on for some time, or when you would like a second opinion or more detailed discussion.

Common Reasons Parents Book an Appointment

Children may be seen for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Coughs, colds, sore throats, and ear pain
  • Fever or feeling generally unwell
  • Rashes, eczema, and skin infections
  • Wheeze, asthma symptoms, or ongoing cough
  • Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, or reflux symptoms
  • Headaches, tiredness, or recurrent infections
  • Allergies and hay fever
  • Urinary symptoms
  • Growth, weight, feeding, or general development concerns
  • School-related health concerns or anxiety-related physical symptoms
  • Private referrals where specialist input may be appropriate

What Happens During a Child’s GP Appointment?

Our GPs will take a careful history, including the symptoms, how long they have been present, any relevant medical history, medications, allergies, and your concerns as a parent.

Your child will then be examined where appropriate. This may include checking their temperature, pulse, oxygen levels, chest, throat, ears, abdomen, skin, or joints depending on the reason for the appointment.

The GP will then explain the likely diagnosis, discuss treatment options, and agree a plan with you. This may include self-care advice, a private prescription if clinically appropriate, further tests, or referral to a specialist.

When Is a Private GP Appointment Appropriate?

A private GP appointment may be appropriate if your child is unwell but stable, and you would like timely medical assessment and advice.

Examples include a child with a persistent cough, recurrent ear infections, a rash that is not settling, ongoing tummy pain, eczema flare-ups, hay fever, or symptoms that keep returning.

It may also be helpful if you are unsure whether your child needs antibiotics, an inhaler, blood tests, or referral to a paediatrician or another specialist.

When Should You Seek Urgent or Emergency Help Instead?

Some symptoms should not wait for a routine private GP appointment.

Out of hours, if you’re worried, you should seek NHS advice through NHS 111 or an NHS walk-in centre if your child has a high temperature and you are worried, is under 3 months old with a temperature of 38°C or above, is 3 to 6 months old with a temperature of 39°C or above, has a fever lasting 5 days or more, has a fever with a rash, is dehydrated, or is not their usual self.

You should call 999 or go to A&E immediately if your child has severe difficulty breathing, is making grunting noises, is sucking in under the ribs, has blue, grey, or very pale lips or skin, is floppy or difficult to wake, is confused, has a seizure, has a non-blanching rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass, has a stiff neck, is bothered by light, or you are seriously worried that they are very unwell.

Private GP appointments are not a substitute for emergency care. If you think your child may be seriously unwell, please seek urgent NHS or emergency help immediately.

Children’s Appointments at The Grosvenor Practice

The Grosvenor Practice can now see children at Millstream House in central Salisbury, provided by MedCentres Plus.

This is an important expansion of our service. Our previous location at New Hall Hospital was an adult-only hospital, which meant we were unable to offer appointments for children there. Our move to MedCentres Plus allows us to support the whole family, including younger patients.

Working Alongside NHS Care

Private GP care can work alongside your child’s NHS care. We are not here to replace your NHS GP, health visitor, school nurse, NHS 111, urgent treatment centres, or emergency services.

Where appropriate, we can provide assessment, advice, private prescriptions, investigation requests, and private referrals. If your child needs urgent or emergency NHS care, we will advise you accordingly.
